JOL Privacy Policy

JOL ("we," "us," or "our") provides a mobile application designed for children and families. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, share, and protect information when you use the JOL app, including our Android and iOS applications, related services, and support channels.

This page describes how JOL handles user information across its mobile apps and related services.

2. Who This App Is For

JOL is intended for children and families. Some features may be used by parents, guardians, or other adult caregivers to create or manage accounts, configure settings, monitor progress, or contact support.

Because the app may be used by or for children under 13, we aim to handle personal information carefully and in accordance with applicable privacy laws and platform requirements, including Google Play policies for apps that include children in their target audience.

3. Information We Collect

Depending on how the app is used, we may collect the following categories of information:

A. Account and profile information

• Parent or guardian name
• Email address
• Login credentials or authentication identifiers
• Child profile information you choose to provide, such as nickname, age range, learning preferences, or progress-related profile data

B. App activity and usage information

• App interactions and feature usage
• Session activity
• Progress, completion, and achievement data
• In-app settings and preferences

C. Device and technical information

• Device model
• Operating system version
• App version
• Language and region settings
• Crash logs, diagnostics, and performance information
• Push notification token, if notifications are enabled (parent app only)

Camera (Kids app)

The Kids app can use the camera only to scan the pairing QR code shown in the parent app. The camera image is read on the device to find the code and is never stored or sent to us.

Coloured pictures (Kids app)

In the Kids app's Paint world, children colour pictures on the device. Their colouring stays on that device and is not sent to us. A grown-up can choose to save a finished picture to the device's photos or share it, only after passing a grown-up check; the app asks for permission to add the picture to Photos and never reads or uploads anything from the photo library.

Subscription information (parent app)

If a parent subscribes to JOL Plus, the purchase is handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We receive the subscription status (plan, renewal and expiry dates) through RevenueCat. We never receive or store card or payment details.

D. Content and files you provide

• Files, images, or content you upload or submit through app features, if applicable

E. Service providers that process information for us

We use the following service providers to run the apps. Each processes information only to provide its service to us:

• Firebase Authentication: sign-in for parents, and an anonymous device sign-in for the Kids app after it is paired
• Cloud Firestore: stores parent accounts, child profiles, quests and progress
• Cloud Functions for Firebase: pairing a Kids device, subscription updates and parent notifications
• Firebase Cloud Messaging: notifications to parents (parent app only)
• Firebase App Check, with Google Play Integrity and Apple App Attest/DeviceCheck: confirms requests come from the genuine apps
• Sentry: crash and error reports (device model, operating system and app versions, and the error). We have turned off collection of personal data in these reports: no names, email addresses or advertising identifiers are sent.
• RevenueCat: subscription status for JOL Plus (parent app only)
• Cloudflare: delivers the stories' pictures, audio and videos

We do not use advertising networks, and the Kids app contains no third-party analytics.

5. Children's Privacy

If the app is used by children, we take additional care with children's information.

• We do not knowingly sell children's personal information.
• The Kids app shows no advertising, contains no third-party advertising or analytics tools, offers no purchases, and has no links that leave the app. The only ways out (updating the app, or saving or sharing a coloured picture) sit behind a grown-up check.
• We do not use children's personal information for behavioral advertising.
• We aim to limit the collection of children's information to what is reasonably necessary to provide and improve the app.
• Where required by law, we expect a parent or guardian to provide consent before personal information about a child is collected or used.

Parents or guardians may contact us to:

• Review information associated with their child's account
• Request correction of information
• Request deletion of a child's information
• Ask questions about our privacy practices

6. Sharing of Information

We may share information only in the following circumstances:

• With service providers that help us operate the app and related systems
• With cloud infrastructure and crash-reporting providers acting on our behalf
• With Apple, Google and RevenueCat, to process a subscription a parent chooses to buy
• With legal authorities or other parties when required by law, regulation, court order, or to protect rights, safety, or the integrity of the service
• In connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of all or part of our business, subject to applicable confidentiality and legal safeguards

We do not sell personal information to third parties.

7. Data Retention

We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including to:

• Maintain active accounts
• Provide the app's services
• Resolve disputes
• Enforce agreements
• Meet legal, tax, accounting, or regulatory obligations

When information is no longer needed, we delete it or de-identify it, unless a longer retention period is required by law.

8. Data Deletion and Your Choices

You may request deletion of your account or associated personal information by contacting us at support@jol-kids.com.

Subject to legal or operational requirements, we will take reasonable steps to:

• Delete or anonymize personal information
• Remove inactive accounts when appropriate
• Honor applicable user rights requests

You may also control certain data practices through your device or app settings, such as notification permissions.

9. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. International Data Transfers

Your information may be processed and stored in countries other than your own, depending on where our service providers operate. When this occurs, we take reasonable steps to require appropriate protections consistent with applicable law.

11. Third-Party Services

The app may rely on third-party services or infrastructure providers. Their handling of data may be governed by their own privacy policies to the extent they act as independent controllers or service providers.

Examples may include:

• Google Firebase and related Google Cloud services
• Sentry (crash reporting)
• RevenueCat (subscriptions, parent app)
• Cloudflare (delivery of story media)
• Apple or Google platform services for notifications or app delivery

12. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal information, including the right to:

• Access your information
• Correct inaccurate information
• Request deletion
• Object to or restrict certain processing
• Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent
